Home Business Ideas

By Jim Biscardi

Have you ever dared to dream of owning your own home business? There are many reasons why a person decides to strike out on his or her own and begin a home business. First, it can be an exhilarating feeling to be your own boss! That's right. Quit the daily 9 to 5 grind and earn your money from the comfort of your own home. Second, having your own home business brings you a great feeling of independence. However, owning a home business is a dream that not many are that fortunate to realize. Not everyone is cut out to run their own home business.

Working from home is appealing to many people. Where else can you work in your pajamas but in your own home? Low start-up cost is another appealing aspect to home business. Often a home business can be started on a shoestring.

What kind of home businesses are out there? There are several that come to mind that require hardly any start-up cost at all. If you like to iron, you can take in people's ironing. I know there is the competition of dry cleaning companies that will do pressing, but many people still prefer the old-fashioned method. You have little to invest but an ironing board, an iron and a can of spray starch which you probably already have. I did ironing on the side when my children were young. It brought in some extra money and a feeling of independence that I did not always have to ask my husband for some extra spending money. If you love children, then perhaps babysitting is your cup of tea. You get to decide the number of children you wish to sit for and what your hours are going to be. There is hardly any start-up cost to this endeavor except to have healthy snacks and lunches for the children you sit for. A friend of mine had a babysitting business and made very good money from it! Do you like animals? Then perhaps pet sitting may be your bag. There is really no start-up cost to this except maybe to distribute business cards or put an ad in the paper. You make sure the animals are fed on time and get their proper exercise. What's even better is that you get your exercise as well! Another home business that requires little or no start-up cost is house sitting. Many people like for a house to look lived in while they are away on vacation or other business trips. This would be an excellent job for a retired person or a mom whose children have flown the nest! The last business that comes to mind is that of a freelance writer. There is really no start-up cost provided that you already have a computer and Internet access. These tools are essential for making contacts and for doing the necessary research for your writing. I must say that I have done freelance writing for about a year now, and I can truly say that it is the best thing that has ever happened to me. It gives me a feeling of self-worth, self-assuredness and independence.

No matter which home business you choose, try to make it so that there is very little start-up cost so that you will be in profit that much sooner. With determination and hard work, you will have a profitable home business in no time!
